Harddisk failure

Harddisk failure

I have encountered a harddisk failure today.  It is a 3TB harddisk and now it is being detected as 4GB.
All data are gone.

I've open up the harddisk and this is what I found.  There is a ring of scratch mark around the platter.
The scratch marks are created by read/write head scratching on the of the data platter.

It would be a nightmare if you are running on a single harddisk system.

I am lucky enough that I had planned for a raid system.  I replaced the damaged harddisk, run a few commands and the system is working good again.  The replacement harddisk cost me around S$150, but it is still better than to lose my all my files.

Sending the harddisk for data-recovery would cost more, I would estimate that it would cost me near S$2000 to recover 90% of my data.

It is always good to have a backup solution for your files.
